Rare medieval relics found in Lincolnshire

Two people in Lincolnshire have made amazing discoveries during lockdown by finding rare ancient relics.

Andrew Deaton from Moulton, near Spalding, found a unique seal matrix while gardening in his home.

The seal matrix has a depiction of St Margaret of Antioch, a Syrian saint from the 3rd or 4th century, with the devil.

André Lopes was on a walk near his house in Grantham when he discovered a flint arrowhead that was somehow still in-tact from the Bronze Age.

These two cases are the latest of the 200 ancient finds that have been reported  to Lincolnshire County Council’s archaeology service this year alone.

Lisa Brundle is the finds liaison officer at Lincolnshire County Council, and she has said the county is a regular location for historical findings.

“It’s amazing what people are finding in the county. We’ve seen everything from prehistoric stone axes, Bronze Age sword pommels, Iron Age brooches, Roman tweezers, coin hoards, early medieval cemeteries and medieval buckles to post-medieval bells.

“People come to us with their items, and we work with a team of volunteers from across the county to research and catalogue them.”
