New academy for vulnerable children completed in Spalding

This story is over

A new alternative academy for vulnerable young people is ready to open in Spalding.

Springwell Alternative Academy Spalding on Matmore Gate will provide 62 much-needed places for children aged between four and 16.

Regional contractor G F Tomlinson has been behind the building work at the new facility, in partnership with Barnsley-based Wellspring Academy Trust and Lincolnshire County Council.

The former South Holland Sixth Form Centre on the site had been refurbished, providing teaching and games areas.

The school for “challenging and vulnerable children” joins three previously opened alternative academies in the county which offer a combined 250 places: Springwell Lincoln, Springwell Grantham and Springwell Mablethorpe.

Wellspring Academy Trust is inviting pupils, parents and local residents to the new Springwell Alternative Academy Spalding open day on Wednesday, January 8 from 10am until noon, before officially opening to pupils on Thursday, January 9.

The project previously encountered delays due to ‘contractual issues’, reported Spalding Today. Young people who should have been taught at the site received their education in Boston as a result.

Phil Willott, executive principal at the Wellspring Academy Trust said: “It is a very proud moment for myself, as the executive principal, to open the doors to our fourth and final alternative academy within Lincolnshire.

“The Trust, DfE, LA, G F Tomlinson and academy staff have worked tirelessly in order to ensure our new home will meet the needs of all our young people, who prior to this had been educated in accommodation well below the expected standard.”

Mark Wilson, CEO at Wellspring Academy Trust said: “We are delighted to welcome Springwell Alternative Academy Spalding into our community of schools and in doing so extending our partnership with the County Council and people of Lincolnshire”.
