The water had just reached the man and woman, both aged 18, when the lifeboat crew arrived. They were stuck in mud up to their waist.

Mud specialists from the Coastguard Rescue Team at Cleethorpes also assisted with the rescue and together they dug them out by hand.

The man and woman were both handed over to the Coastguard team for medical assessment and returned home safe and well.

Helmsman Shaun Sonley said: “The tide was rising fast around them. By high tide there will be several metres of water in that location.

“This was a swift and professional operation by the two teams working closely together. Both were well stuck and there is no way they could have escaped unassisted.”
