Person dies after rail bridge fall

A person has died after falling from a bridge above the railway line between Newark and Grantham.

British Transport Police were called to the incident at around 7:20am on Thursday, November 15.

Paramedics attended the incident but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 7.20am today (15/11), British Transport Police were called to the line close to Newark Northgate station after reports a person had fallen from a bridge.

“Paramedics attended alongside officers however a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

“Officers are also working to establish the circumstances of how the person came to be on the tracks and receive their fatal injuries. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

LNER services were blocked this morning and commuters were advised to take alternative routes.

Nottinghamshire Police also closed Beacon Hill Road, a bridge which runs over the railway in Newark.

The bridge has now been reopened, but the cycle path still remains blocked off by officers.
