Patients told to avoid hospital this winter

Patients across the county are being urged to avoid hospital this winter, as the NHS warns of another crisis.

Self care and pharmacists are being promoted by providers in Lincolnshire as alternatives to a trip to the hospital.

GP practices and accident and emergency departments often see a rise in demand over the winter months, as seasonal illnesses take hold.

Doctor Sunil Hundocha, for NHS Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group, has told patients to make use of hospital alternatives.

He said: “The winter period is often a difficult time of year with a lot of pressure on health care services.

“However, there are a lot of alternatives provisions available to patients, so they don’t necessarily need to turn up to A&E departments.

“This is especially true if they have a relatively minor condition which they could perhaps treat through self-care.

“Pharmacists also play a very important role. They can advise you on the more common problems including coughs, colds, aches and pains.”

Earlier this year, a new app was launched by providers in Lincolnshire to help patients find the most appropriate treatment for their needs.
