A Scunthorpe GP practice will double the size of its branch surgery as part of a redevelopment including three new consultation rooms.
Work began at Ancora Medical Practice on Detuyll Street, which is a branch of the practice on Ashby Road in Scunthorpe, on Monday September 3 and is due to be completed by April 2019.
The 10-partner practice cares for almost 20,000 patients across the town and has 13 doctors, six nurses and nine health care assistants, as well as being a training centre for GPs.
Its new facilities will include three new consultation rooms, a minor operations unit, waiting room and reception and a service to support opioid-dependent patients.
The extension will be funded through investment from the GPS and grants from both NHS England and Estates and Transformation funding and the local authority.
Practice manager Christine Buckley said: “The GP partners at Ancora have personally invested significantly from their own personal income as they are committed to improving care and facilities for their patients.
“We have always been restricted by lack of space. But the new rooms will allow us to hold extra clinics and offer better services to our patients, closer to home.
“Opioid dependent patients will be given specific support within the redevelopment and this is one of the most pleasing aspects of the project for me. As well as other things, patients who are addicted to pain relief drugs will receive psychological support and we will have counsellors on site to help with that.”
Doctor James Taylor added: “We will be really pleased when we can officially open our expanded premises. This project means we are able to provide a better environment for patients and staff.”
Agencia secured the funding for the redevelopment and a spokesperson for the company said: “Our award-winning pilot project to support individuals at risk from addiction to opioid painkillers enabled a successful bid to be made for over £160,000 from Public Health England to build a dedicated centre as part of this vital initiative.”
