Watch dramatic demolition of road bridge above M180 near Scunthorpe

Highways England has released video footage of Moor Road Bridge spanning the M180 south of Scunthorpe being partially demolished.

The motorway was closed in both directions last week to allow a 500 tonne crane to install the 24.3m long bridge edge beam.

The work is part of a £1.5 scheme to repair damage caused when a forklift truck, on the trailer of a low loader, hit the bridge.

Other improvements to the bridge now include a new footpath and barrier.

The bridge edge beam weighed approximately 64 tonnes and was installed alongside the existing bridge beams and bridge deck.

Highways England project manager Sujad Hussain said: “As you can see from the video this was a complex piece of engineering to ensure the old beam was demolished and new one was lifted into place by our contractors, A-one+.

“Careful planning was needed to ensure the lift went without any problems, which is why there was no alternative but to close the M180 over the weekend.

“Work will continue over the next few weeks with the overall scheme due for completion in September.

“In the meantime I would like to thank drivers for their patience while we have been carrying out this work.”

“There will be no more weekend closures, however overnight closures will be required until late August to install the bridge barrier, waterproofing and resurfacing.

“Clearly signed diversions will be in place during these closures.”
