Filming has begun at Gainsborough Old Hall for Oscar-nominated Mike Leigh’s latest movie Peterloo.

The 74-year-old Mr Turner director, who has received seven Oscar nominations throughout his career, will then start  filming on Steep Hill in Lincoln tomorrow (July 6).

Peterloo is a real-life story based on the massacre in Manchester during 1819 where 15 people were killed as a cavalry charged at over 60,000 protesters leaving more than 400 injured.

Gainsborough Old Hall is currently restricted as a cast of more than 100 actors attend filming, but will reopen on Friday, July 7.

The film is expected to be Leigh’s biggest budget movie and will be in cinemas in 2018.
