‘Out we must go’: Watch Sleaford and North Hykeham MP Caroline Johnson make her maiden speech

This story is over

Sleaford and North Hykeham MP Dr Caroline Johnson has used her maiden speech in the House of Commons to argue that Parliament should respect the result of the EU referendum.

Dr Johnson said that despite the referendum not being legally binding, the result was not advice but an instruction to MPs to push ahead with Brexit.

She said: “There has been much debate recently as to whether the referendum was mandatory or advisory and the relative authorities of the government, the legislature and the judiciary.

“I am not a lawyer. But I fail to understand how one can ask the electorate a question and then even consider disregarding the result.

“I believe that the referendum is not advice but an instruction to us.

“We asked the people and the people said out so out we must go.”
