Van driver admits causing death of elderly Woodhall Spa couple

A van driver admitted causing the deaths of a Lincolnshire couple by careless driving following a road collision at Metheringham.

Brian, 82, and Ruth Dickinson, 77, from the Woodhall Spa area died after the crash on the B1188 Sleaford Road between the Dunston turn off and Metheringham on the morning of January 11 this year.

The crash involved a Mercedes box van and a car, and three air ambulances were scrambled to the scene shortly after 9am.

The driver of the box van, Michael Boothman, 37, admitted two charges of causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Lincoln Crown Court.

Judge John Pini QC imposed an interim driving ban on Boothman and adjourned sentence until December 9 so that he can recover from a hip replacement operation.

But the judge warned Boothman all options will be open when he is sentenced.

Boothman, of Farrar Court, Bramley, Leeds, was granted bail on condition he attends for the preparation of a pre-sentence report by the probation service.
