Grimsby Town fans slam ‘terrible’ decision to sack manager Marcus Bignot

Furious Grimsby Town fans have voiced their displeasure at the “terrible” decision to sack manager Marcus Bignot after just five months in charge.

Bignot was dismissed by the board on April 10 with The Mariners currently in 14th position in League Two.

The former Solihull Moors boss was only appointed back in November, following previous Grimsby manager Paul Hurst leaving Blundell Park to move to Shrewsbury Town in League One.

In an official statement, the club said: “Following Grimsby Town Football Club’s return to The EFL, there remains a strong ambition to build on last season’s promotion.

“Therefore, it is with regret that today the club has decided to release the current management team from their first team duties.

“The board would like to put on record their thanks to Marcus Bignot, Michael Moore and Gary Whild for all their hard work and efforts during the last 6 months and wish them the best for their futures.”

Former Mariners’ boss Russell Slade is strongly fancied to make a return to Blundell Park.

The decision to release Bignot has caught many fans by surprise, especially given the 3-1 win at playoff hopefuls Blackpool at the weekend.

Rumours have been flying around that unrest in the dressing room led to the sacking.

Fans have argued that Bignot should have been given more time in charge to allow his vision for the club to flourish.

MarinerRob from the Grimsby Town fans’ forum “The Fishy” said: “I know Marcus has had an ‘up and down’ record with results and performances but to give him only five months is terrible, in my opinion.

“And I’ve only seen four wins in 21 games but still felt he deserved more time for ‘his’ team and methods to show progress. Even against Doncaster I saw positive signs.”

chicaneuk from the same forum added: “It seems far too late in the season now to be building a push for a playoff place… so I don’t see why they wouldn’t have at least let Marcus see the season out before making a decision.

“It’s all very strange.”

LondonMariner43 simply said: “Completely stupid decision.”
