High winds and heavy rain from Storm Doris have battered Lincoln and the rest of the county for most of the day.

Gusts of over 50mph hit the county throughout much of the day, with temperatures also noticeably cooler than in recent days.

Storm Doris develops into “weather bomb”

What is a weather bomb?

A ‘weather bomb’ is not a perfect meteorological term but is defined as an intense low pressure system with a central pressure that falls 24 millibars in a 24-hour period. A better description can be more directly linked to the meteorological phenomena known as rapid or explosive cyclogenesis. This is where dry air from the stratosphere flows into an area of low pressure. This causes air within the depression to rise very quickly and increases its rotation, which in turn deepens the pressure and creates a more vigorous storm.

Lorries ignore Humber Bridge closure over Storm Doris strong winds

Humber Bridge is closed to high-sided vehicles as a precaution to Storm Doris, but lorry drivers are continuing to drive on it, Grimsby Telegraph reports.

PC Barry Gardner of Hunberside Police said “The message is simple – if you think the wind is going to affect your vehicle, don’t go across.”

Lincolnshire Police said: “As Storm Doris passes by we are advising people not to make journeys if they don’t have to. We are taking reports from across the county of trees across the road, power cables down, flying trampolines and gazebos. High sided vehicles are advised to take extra care.

“Please keep watching the weather reports that will provide more information on how the weather will affect Lincolnshire. Take action if you are able to secure your garden furniture and other items. If you see trees across the road or other potential dangers, please contact us on 101. We’re working with our partners to keep everyone safe.”

Full refund available for East Midlands Trains’ customers

Customers holding tickets for travel today can get a full refund on their ticket or can use it to travel on Friday, February 24.

The train operator is advising people not to travel today.

Jake Kelly, managing director for East Midlands Trains, said: “Along with many other transport operators, there is wide-spread disruption across our network as a result of Storm Doris.

“We are therefore advising people not to try and travel today. 

“We apologise to customers affected by today’s disruption. We know this is a very challenging day for customers, however safety always comes first and we have to take account of the conditions in operating our trains and the advice we give to customers.”

Lincolnshire Police received a call every two minutes today over storm-related incidents, while Fire and Rescue dealt with over 70 incidents so far.
